.XXX Controversy and Should I buy an Adult dot Com Domain?

First and foremost the plan has been approved by Icann (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) and the .XXX domain will be rolling out by June or July of 2011.  Now you’re probably asking if or why you should buy a dot com domain.  Although the new .XXX domain will be an adult only area there is no proof that the idea will take off or fail like several other suffixes.

There is also quite a bit of controversy around the new domain.  One huge problem is filtering and access.  The .XXX suffix can easily be blocked from view by a service provider which means a city, town, state or even country can stop .XXX domain from being viewed.  Recently a US computer scientist, George Sadowsky, commented the he “believes that the creation of .xxx would mark the first instance of an action by this board (Icann) that may directly encourage such filtering.”

Why worry?  Buy a .com domain name today!

Update:  Turkey Bans Domains Containing “Adult” Words.  The online world is talking as is all those concerned for internet freedom about Turkey, the largest Muslim country in the world, and their recent ban of domains containing certain words.  Long lists of words have been submitted to web hosting companies and they were asked to pull any and all domains with these “words” contained in them.  No concern was taken of the content on these said domains and to make matters worse the “words” may not even be words but rather sequential letters within other words. This would be devastating to any business online or anywhere else for that matter.

As I stated, they are looking more for sequential letters rather than words and no concern was taken to the content on these banned domains, if a certain word could be found in your domain it’s being pulled.  “Donanimaemi.com” is being pulled because it contains the word “animal” in it; it’s a hardware store!  “Sanaldestekunitesi.com” is also being pulled because it contains the word “anal” even though in Turkish it simply means “Virtual Support Unit.”

There are 138 banned words in total and over 30 of them are euphemisms for masturbation.  These euphemisms could be people’s names, fruit or furniture pieces.  A few funny notes; the largest government project in turkey right now is a large canal project and they just had their website banned as well.  Guess if you can figure out why!  “Pic” also made the banned list, because is slang for bastard.  Some names make sense while others are completely off the mark.

If Turkey can do this, imagin how easy it would be for them to ban the  new TLD .xxx, .gay and whatever new one they’ll think up  It will just make sorting for the suffix that much easier for local governments or even local authorities to ban or to prevent websites from being seen.  Why worry about your domain being filtered out; go with a tired and true .com domain name!
